How Do I...?

How to Avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a nerve disorder in  the hand that causes pain, numbness and tingling. It is caused by repetitive motion of the hands, such as computer use.

1.  Set up your work space with adjustable screens, keyboards and work surfaces to eliminate extra strain to the  wrists and hands. Position your keyboard so that it is at elbow level.  Your forearms, wrists and hands should be in a straight line parallel to the floor as you type.

 2.  Use a wrist pad with your keyboard. A wrist pad is a cushioned support that rests under your wrists, runs the  length of your keyboard and takes the stress off your wrists by raising them to the level of the keyboard.

3.  Take short breaks every hour at work.  During your break, stand up, breathe in slowly and deeply, allow your arms  to hang loosely, and shake for a couple of seconds. This will prevent buildup of muscle tension.

How do I find a file on my hard drive ?

Well the first thing you must know the file name or  part of the file name. Example AAmanual.pdf       ( the first part of the file is the name  separated by a period  followed by three letters, these three letters are the extension.  The  extension tell the computer what type of file it is.

File extension example  xxxx.txt   is a  text file,  xxxx.exe is a executable file (program), there are 1000's of extension

in our example xxxx.pdf is a Portable Document Format (PDF)  is a universal file format that preserves the fonts, images, graphics, and layout of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create  it. AdobeĀ® PDF

Now you know how a file is broken down into parts we can now do a search for it.

You can put the entire file name in the search or Just part of it, if you want to just find this 1 file you type in AAmanual.pdf     if you want to find all files that begin with AA  you would type in the file search field    AA*.*    if you want to find all PDF files, you would type in the file search field *.pdf          NOTE  Using the * in the file search is  called using wild cards

What is the major  difference between a workgroup and a domain for Windows Networks ?

The major difference between a workgroup and a domain is where the user account information resides for user logon authentication. For a workgroup, user account information resides in the local security  database on each computer in the workgroup. For the domain, the user account  information resides in the Active Directory database.

What is the registry and what does it do in a Windows O/S?

The registry is a hierarchical database  that stores Windows  hardware and software settings. The registry controls the Windows  operating system by providing the appropriate  initialization information to start applications and load components, such as device drivers and network protocols. The registry contains a variety of different types of data, including the hardware installed on the computer, the installed device drivers, applications, network protocols, and network  adapter card settings. This is for Win 95 and Up.

When is it Time to Upgrade or Get a New Computer

Well it's time to Upgrade if you have  run out of room on your hard drive, your new program won't work cause the lack of memory, or your new game look's like a slide show. Many older  machines can be Upgraded by adding a 2nd hard drive, adding memory or  installing a new video card. It's time to get a new computer if you have  add all the memory you computer can handle and it is still not enough, your computer will not recognize that new 200 gig hard drive or will not accept PCI cards.   Only you can make the chose weather to get a new system or an UP- grade do the trick.
